Lateral Ankle Stabilization
Overview
Lateral ankle stabilization is a surgical procedure designed to repair and strengthen weakened or torn ligaments in the ankle. It is typically performed to correct chronic ankle instability and prevent recurrent sprains, especially in athletes and individuals with a history of repeated ankle injuries.
Procedure :
- 1) This is an open procedure with minimal incision made on the outer side of the ankle.
- 2) The damaged ligaments is stabilized with an internal brace.
- 3) The ankle is secured to restore normal function and stability.
Post-Operative Care :
- 1) Weight-Bearing Status : Partial-weight-bearing (PWB) for 2-4 weeks in a CAM boot, then transitioning into a supportive sneaker, possibly with an ankle brace.
- 2) Physical Therapy : Begins after 3 weeks, focusing on range of motion (ROM), strength, and proprioception.
- 3) Return to Activity : Full recovery in 3-6 months, depending on the severity of instability.
